Across Southern Dolpa
Overview
The hidden land of Dolpa was first settled in the 10th century by Rokpa farmers and Drokpa nomads from Tibet. Tucked away in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri Himal, this arid, high-mountain desert is a place of howling winds, vast open spaces, and endless skies of blinding sunlight. It is a land where remote, scattered fortress villages and ancient monasteries stand against the elements, and where the air is filled with the scent of juniper and the sounds of passing yak caravans. Truly, Dolpa is Tibet in Nepal.
The Lower Dolpa Circuit trek from Juphal to Juphal via Ringmo and Do Tarap showcases the region's stunning contrast of environments. Trekkers are treated to a magnificent variety of landscapes, moving from lush meadows and maple forests to snow-covered glaciers and sweeping views of the barren, mighty hills stretching northwards into Tibet.
