Overview

At the head of the Kali Gandaki River, north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, lies one of Nepal’s most culturally fascinating and scenically dramatic regions-known to its inhabitants as Lo and to the rest of the world as Mustang. This tiny Himalayan principality remained shrouded in mystery until it was officially opened to foreign visitors by the Nepalese government in 1992.

The Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most unique trekking experiences, offering travelers the opportunity to explore the ancient and mystical kingdom famously known as “The Forbidden Kingdom.” Situated in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Mustang features a stark, high-desert landscape with barren hills, deep gorges, and wind-carved cliffs-dramatically different from the lush green trekking regions of Nepal.

Historically, much of Mustang’s prosperity came from its strategic position along the Kali Gandaki trade route to Tibet. Under the patronage of its rulers, numerous monasteries, chortens, and religious structures were built, many of which still stand today as living symbols of the region’s deep spiritual and cultural heritage. Mustang Trekking offers an extraordinary blend of adventure, ancient culture, and dramatic Himalayan landscapes- creating an experience unlike anywhere else in Nepal.
