Overview

Nepal’s extraordinary natural diversity and strong conservation efforts have made it a haven for bird lovers. With over 850 recorded bird species, the country offers incredible opportunities to witness rare and migratory birds across a variety of landscapes from subtropical plains to alpine highlands.

Kathmandu Valley alone hosts a surprising number of species, making it an ideal starting point for birdwatchers. Popular nearby spots include:

Phulchowki, Godavari, and Nagarjun Hills – rich in both flora and fauna, these forested areas are renowned for their bird diversity.

Taudaha Lake - a serene stop on the way to Dakshinkali, especially vibrant in winter when migratory waterfowl arrive.

Beyond the valley, Nepal’s national parks and reserves offer exceptional birding experiences:

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in the eastern Terai is considered Nepal’s top birding site. It draws a spectacular variety of resident and migratory birds, including flocks from as far as Siberia.

Chitwan and Bardiya National Parks - ideal for spotting birds in lowland tropical forests and riverine habitats.

Everest and Annapurna regions - home to high-altitude species including the striking Himalayan Monal (Danphe), Nepal’s national bird.

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious traveler, Nepal’s diverse ecosystems promise a memorable bird watching journey year-round.
